2011 Division Series Game 4

Here is a quick look at Quality starts and Game 4s in this year’s post-season.

Teams with Quality Starts in Game 4: 1-0

So far in this year’s playoffs, teams with Quality Starts: 9 wins – 2 losses. Teams are 2-0 when their pitcher throws a quality start and the opposing pitcher does not.

Rangers @ Rays  (Tuesday)

Neither Rangers’ Matt Harrison and Rays’ Jeremy Hellickson could make it to the sixth inning. Harrison pitched 5 innings, allowing 2 earned runs. Hellickson gave up 3 runs in 4 innings before handing it over to the bullpen. The Rangers squeaked out a 5-4 road win and take the series 3 games to 1.

Recap: The Rangers won the series with only 1 quality start (1-0). The Rays have had 2 quality starts, both by lefties (1-1).

Yankees @ Tigers  (Tuesday)

Rick Porcello (4 runs in 6 innings) and A.J. Burnett (1 run in 5 2/3 innings) both failed to reach the quality start barrier. The Yankees won 10-1 to tie the series at 2 and send everyone back to New York.

Recap:  Tigers’ pitchers have thrown 1 quality start in the series (1-0). The only ‘quality start’ by the Yankees was by Ivan Nova in Game 1 (1-0).

Brewers @ Diamondbacks (Wednesday)

Both starters, Brewer Randy Wolf and Diamondback Joe Saunders, only pitched 3 innings in this 10-6 Arizona win to even the series and send it back to Milwaukee for game 5.

Recap: Both teams have won their only quality start in the series, the Brewers in Game 1 and the D-backs in Game 3.

Phillies @ Cardinals  (Wednesday)

Cardinals pitcher Edwin Jackson won the game and earned a quality start, going 6 innings allowing only 2 runs. Philllies starter Roy Oswalt also went 6 innings, but allowed 5 runs. The series is even at 2 games apiece, heading back to Philly for game 5.

Recap: Both teams have 2 quality starts in this series. The Phillies have won both of theirs, while the Cards are 1-1. The Cardinals’ quality start loss was in game 3, when both teams had a quality start.
